A Brief History of Computer Mechanix

Introduction
Since its inception in 1987, Computer Mechanix, Inc. has strived to become the premier provider of computer products and technology services for the Western Upper Peninsula. Computer Mechanix provides prompt, reliable service delivered by a knowledgeable staff; ready to help you find the best solution for your home and business computing needs.

History
In 1988, a team of two Michigan Tech University (MTU) graduates, who returned to the area from industry, and one Tech student began to discuss the possibility of a wholesale and mail order business providing parts for unique systems. They were certain that they could provide better and more cost effective solutions - so they began operations from the back half of a ski shop in Houghton. From this humble beginning Computer Mechanix grew rapidly, providing computer repair parts, upgrade parts, and support for a nationwide network of electronics dealers.

As computers evolved from diskette based systems running MS-DOS to more complex systems running the early graphical systems, Computer Mechanix began to produce custom systems for the scientific and academic community. More complex systems and more demanding usage prompted a change to networking and support services. Servers, networking, and professional knowledge services became major elements in the product and service mix offered by the company. With each change, Computer Mechanix grew, adding staff, skills and services to meet the needs of their customers.

As I look back at and consider the path we've taken, the journey has been an enjoyable one. We've grown our business, developed new relationships with our clients and expanded the Computer Mechanix family.

Though there have been surprises and turns on that path, I'm proud to say that the MTU student that helped to found the company is still with us, and is in fact the President of the company and one of the owners.

I'm happy to look back and say that we've proved what we started out to do many years ago -- that a group of dedicated people in the Copper Country can provide service, parts, systems, and solutions that not only equaled, but surpassed, the national chains.
